What is a Registered Builder or Remodeler?

A Registered Builder is a professional designation granted to a builder who meets specific requirements. In order to become a Registered Builder/Remodelor, an applicant must meet several minimum standards set forth by the Home Builder's Association of Kentucky.

Minimum Standards

A Builder/Remodelor must meet the following criteria for becoming a Registered Builder/Remodelor to the satisfaction of the Registered Builder/Remodelor Committee of jurisdiction:

  • Be a member in good standing of their local Home Builders Association and have successfully completed at least three (3) major construction projects (which can include remodeling projects) within the past two (2) years to the satisfaction of the Registered Builder/Remodeler Committee of jurisdiction. Applicant must have controlled and supervised all phases of construction.
  • The member's primary occupation must be in the building or a related contracting industry for a period of no less than two years.
  • Be sponsored by a Registered Builder/Remodelor member in good standing.
  • No Registered Builder/Remodelor shall perform work or provide goods to a consumer without written contract if the aggregate contract price exceeds one thousand, five hundred dollars ($1500). The written contract is required to contain the following provisions:
    • Names and address of all parties to the contract
    • The date of execution of the contract
    • A description of the work to be performed by the contractor
    • Simple and clear payment terms
  • Issue an express warranty of the work effective for a period of not less than one (1) year and otherwise describing the scope and the extent of the warranty in a form acceptable to the Registered Builder/Remodelor Committee of jurisdiction.
  • All members must carry Kentucky Workers' Compensation Insurance (submit annual certificates of all Workers' Compensation Insurance), and maintain a minimum of $250,000 in liability insurance.
  • Submit favorable references from:
    • Three (3) customers
    • Three (3) suppliers or subcontractors
    • One (1) financial institution
  • Submit to a conciliation program in an effort to resolve disagreements between a member and a customer. If conciliation fails, the customer and builder shall enter into binding arbitration.
  • Complete a minimum of six (6) hours of continuing education over a one (1) year period. Two (2) of these hours must be in completed safety training for the construction industry and four (4) of these hours must be completed in the business management and/or technical areas of the construction industry.
  • Sign a Registered Builder/Remodelor agreement indicating continued compliance with all minimum standards.
